SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Fire crews continue working Sunday to contain the Quarry Road Fire in Shallotte, which has now burned 283 acres and is 50% contained.

The wildfire started Friday, July 10, and the cause remains under investigation, according to the N.C. Forest Service.

Wildland firefighting crews will continue installing fire lines, monitoring the area, and mopping up smoldering organic fuels that could continue to produce smoke.

Officials say updated mapping shows the fire is 283 acres in size. Fire officials explain that 50% containment means portions of the fire line have been secured and are not expected to allow the fire to spread without additional firefighting action.

Rainfall over the weekend helped reduce fire activity in areas with lighter fuels. Officials say about eight-tenths of an inch of rain fell over the fire area, but some organic materials continue to smolder. Fire behavior could increase if winds pick up.

Currently, no structures are threatened by the fire.

All previous evacuation orders have been lifted, and residents have returned home. Roads in the area are open.
