LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick Town Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is being recognized for its dedication to service and patriotism.

During the annual North Carolina Fourth of July Festival events, the chapter received a certificate of acknowledgement from the North Carolina House of Representatives honoring its outstanding service to the state and country during America’s 250th Anniversary.

The recognition was presented at the start of the July 4th parade by North Carolina Representative Charlie Miller and State Auditor Dave Boliek. Brunswick Town Chapter Regent Barbara McIntyre accepted the certificate along with a North Carolina flag that had been flown over the state legislative building on June 24.

For years, the Brunswick Town Chapter has helped organize the July 3rd naturalization ceremony and participated in the Fourth of July parade. Members spend months preparing for the events, including hosting a reception welcoming new citizens and designing the chapter’s parade float.

“DAR is a lineage society, but first and foremost it is a service organization,” McIntyre said. “Our members spend many hours each year performing many acts of service locally and nationally.”

The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct lineage from a Revolutionary War patriot. The organization focuses on promoting patriotism, education, and historic preservation.

Today, DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer organization with more than 185,000 members and 3,000 chapters worldwide.

The Brunswick Town Chapter has more than 180 members, including several who are descendants of Patriots who lived in Brunswick County during the fight for American independence. The chapter’s membership traces its lineage to more than 700 verified Patriots from the original 13 colonies.
