City to officially rename Greenfield Grind Skate Park for Alec Chambers
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington will officially dedicate a local skate park later this month in honor of professional skateboarder Alec Chambers, who died after being struck by a vehicle late last year.
The former Greenfield Grind Skate Park will be dedicated as The Alec Chambers Skate Park during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at 302 Willard St.
Chambers grew up skating at Greenfield and became a well-known member of Wilmington’s skateboarding community.
The effort to rename the park began after Chambers’ death in December 2025. Family members, friends and fellow skaters pushed for the change, and an online petition supporting the new name received more than 6,800 signatures.
Wilmington City Council later approved the renaming proposal after the city’s Naming Facilities Committee unanimously recommended it move forward.
Chambers, a professional skateboarder and artist, died Dec. 30, 2025, from injuries sustained after he was struck by a vehicle near Satellite Bar & Lounge in Wilmington’s South Front neighborhood.
Police charged Michelle Lane Masiello in connection with the crash. She faces charges including second-degree murder, felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger and injury to real property.
The charges against Masiello are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Friends of Chambers previously described the skate park as an important part of his life and said renaming it would preserve his connection to Wilmington’s skateboarding community.
The Aug. 21 dedication will formally mark the park’s new name and honor Chambers’ life and impact on local skaters.
