Island Men Backyard BBQ Cook-Off returning for fifth year

FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — The Island Men Backyard BBQ Cook-Off will return this fall for its fifth year, bringing barbecue competition, live music and family activities to the Fort Fisher area.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at Blakeslee Air Force Recreation Area. Gates will open at 10:30 a.m.
Organizers expect more than 15 pitmasters to compete, with each preparing at least 10 pork butts on-site. Judging will follow North Carolina Barbecue Society rules, and competitors will vie for $1,500 in prize money and trophies.
Visitors will be able to sample barbecue from participating teams and vote for the People’s Choice Award. Admission is $15 and includes 10 tasting tickets and one voting ticket. Children under 10 can attend for free.
The event is also expected to feature live music, vendors, artisans, concessions and a children’s play area. Organizers estimate attendance could reach about 2,000 people.
The Island Men is a nonprofit organization with more than 200 members. The group says proceeds from its events support local charities and children’s educational, civic and athletic programs.
In previous years, the cook-off has drawn more than 1,000 attendees and featured local pitmasters competing for both judges’ awards and the People’s Choice title.
