New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office reviewing Flock camera data retention policy
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing how it uses Flock license plate reader cameras following recent questions and concerns about the technology and how long data is kept.
The sheriff’s office says North Carolina law allows captured license plate information to be retained for up to 90 days, with certain exceptions.
But the agency says its current policy is more restrictive. The sheriff’s office currently keeps the data for 30 days.
The agency says that shorter retention period was put in place as part of its commitment to using the technology responsibly while maintaining transparency and protecting residents’ privacy.
The sheriff’s office says it is now reviewing its retention policy with staff and its policy team following recent recommendations from Flock Safety.
Sheriff McMahon says the agency must balance the needs of law enforcement with privacy concerns.
“North Carolina law establishes the maximum; our responsibility is to determine what retention period best serves our community while protecting privacy and supporting legitimate law enforcement investigations,” McMahon said.
The sheriff’s office says it will continue to review emerging law enforcement best practices and make changes when appropriate.
The agency also says it will keep the community informed of any changes to its Flock camera policies, adding that responsible use, transparency and appropriate oversight remain priorities.
