West Columbus High School mourns death of longtime football coach Brandon Smith

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) — West Columbus High School is mourning the death of longtime football coach Brandon Smith.

The West Columbus High School athletic department announced Smith’s death Tuesday, describing him as a valued member of the Vikings football program and school community.

Head football coach LaMonte Williamson said Smith had been part of the program for several years and had served on his coaching staff since the beginning of his eight-year tenure at West Columbus.

“Over those years, he became so much more than a coach — he was a valued member of our Viking family,” Williamson said.

Smith was loved and respected by players and coaches and had a special ability to connect with young athletes, particularly the team’s linemen, according to Williamson.

“He always knew how to push them, motivate them, and bring out their very best,” Williamson said.

Williamson said Smith’s impact on the program extended far beyond wins and losses.

“The relationships he built, the young men he helped develop, and the memories we shared with him will remain a part of West Columbus Football forever,” Williamson said.

Smith will be missed by players, coaches, the school and the entire Viking community.

Williamson is asking the community to keep Smith’s family, friends, players, coaches and the West Columbus family in their thoughts and prayers.
