New Leland Police initiative aims to help first responders assist people with autism

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The Leland Police Department has launched a new program designed to help first responders identify people with autism who may need additional support during an emergency.

The department is providing free seatbelt covers to Leland residents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The covers wrap around a vehicle’s seatbelt and are intended to alert first responders that the person may need additional patience, guidance or assistance during an emergency. They can also be moved between vehicles or attached to backpacks while traveling.

Each cover includes an interior slot where caregivers can provide information that could be useful to first responders, including the person’s name, date of birth, triggers, medical concerns and emergency contact information.

Leland Police said the department will not collect or store that information in police records.

The covers are available only to Leland residents and are limited to one per person with autism. Residents can submit an online request, after which a Leland Police community engagement officer will contact them to schedule a time to receive the cover.

If supplies run out, residents may be placed on a waitlist until more covers become available.

The department is encouraging people with autism and their caregivers to attend the pickup appointment together. Police say the meeting can give residents an opportunity to meet officers and establish a connection before an emergency occurs.
