WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than $5.4 million in federal transportation funding has been approved for four pedestrian and roadway projects across the Wilmington region.

The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Board approved $5,434,400 through its Locally Administered Projects Program for projects planned in fiscal years 2029 and 2030.

The selected projects include $1.84 million for sidewalk and roadway improvements along Medical Center Drive and nearly $1.7 million for sidewalks and pedestrian signals on New Centre Drive.

Another $973,600 will go toward a multi-use path on South Navassa Road, while $921,600 was approved for a sidewalk project on South Lake Park Boulevard.

The four projects have a combined cost of about $6.79 million, including roughly $1.36 million in local matching funds.

WMPO received seven applications from six member jurisdictions requesting a combined $12.1 million.

The Locally Administered Projects Program distributes federal transportation funding to locally sponsored projects. Applications are scored using criteria that include safety, connectivity, resiliency and regional transportation planning goals.

Following the board’s approval, WMPO will work with the project sponsors and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to move the projects into development.
