Golf Barn to host first wiener dog race benefiting Paws Place
WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — Dachshunds will take over the driving range at The Golf Barn in Brunswick County this weekend as the business prepares to host its first wiener dog race.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, with races beginning at 11 a.m. at The Golf Barn, located at 7 Bell Swamp Connection NE in Winnabow.
Golf Barn Operations Manager Carrie Davis appeared on WWAY’s Good Morning Carolina to discuss the event, which will also raise money for Paws Place Dog Rescue in Winnabow.
Davis said approximately 20 dachshunds had already registered to compete, with more dogs welcome to sign up on the day of the event.
The Golf Barn will open at 10 a.m. for registration, and each participating dog will contribute $10 to Paws Place.
The nonprofit organization rescues and cares for dogs while working to find them permanent homes.
Davis said the idea behind the event is to bring the community together while supporting a local animal rescue organization.
“It’s gonna be the first time we’re doing this at the Golf Barn,” Davis said. “I want it to be a gathering of just happy times, good puppies, you know, just having a good time.”
The races will take place on the facility’s driving range.
Spectators are also welcome to attend, with no admission charge to watch the dogs compete.
Good Morning Carolina anchor Matt Bennett’s dog Sherman is among the dogs registered for Saturday’s race.
His owner said he and his wife have been practicing with Sherman at home, using treats and encouragement to prepare him for the competition.
Davis said she hopes the race will become an annual event and could eventually expand to include other dog breeds.
