A Celebration of Life: Honoring Donna Gregory

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On Saturday, family, friends, and colleagues gathered at Thalian Hall to celebrate the life of former WWAY news anchor Donna Gregory. Hundreds attended in person, with thousands more watching online to honor her memory.

Donna died in November 2024 after a brave fight with lung cancer. She was loved by many, both as a respected journalist and as a mother, friend, and mentor.

Her eldest son, Sam, began the ceremony by sharing what Donna meant to him. He reminded everyone that Donna was more than the news anchor they saw on TV—she had a special way of connecting with people.

“My mom truly cared about others,” Sam said. “She didn’t just ask how you were doing—she wanted to hear your whole story. She made you feel seen, valued, and loved.”

Donna’s children—Sam, Callan, Avery, and Everett—shared their own memories throughout the ceremony. Callan spoke about Donna’s tradition of choosing a word to live by each year.

In 2024, Donna chose the word “Exhale.”

“‘Exhale’ wasn’t just about breathing—it was about letting go,” Callan said, reflecting on how her mom embraced peace in her final months.

Randy Aldridge, a longtime friend, shared a conversation he had with Donna in her last days.

“She found success, not just in her career, but in the faces of her children and grandchildren,” Randy said.

He also spoke about Donna’s unwavering faith, which gave her peace in her final days. “She was happy. She knew she made a difference, and she was grateful to have known all of you.”

Donna’s siblings, Tom and Kathy, shared a final goodbye.

“Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in our stories, laughter, and lessons. She will always be in our hearts. We love you, Diva,” Kathy said.
