A tough decision leads to Wilmington Sharks canceling 2020 season

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–The summer months in the Cape Fear are known for things like beaches and baseball. Unfortunately with an ongoing pandemic there will not be the latter this year for the Wilmington Sharks collegiate baseball team.

“You know we have to look after our players, host families, our staff, coaching staff,”says Wilmington Sharks General Manger Carson Bowen. “So, at the end of the day it’s a tough call to make. The toughest call of my career, but it was the right call and we can stand behind it.”

It has been a spring and summer of uncertainty for the Sharks. They were originally set to begin their season on May 28th, but then it was pushed back to July 1st. Then, on Thursday they would have to make the decision to scrap the season as a whole. The team says this decision was not made lightly as it impacts much more than just the game of baseball.

“We explored a couple more options and after some discussions around the league it just ended up being too much for us to overcome,”says Bowen. “I feel for all these parents, kids, all these fans cause we were really looking forward to having a really good summer.”

The Sharks organization says they know people are obviously disappointed in the end result, but right now the health of everyone is a priority in the Wilmington community. The teams says they stand behind their decision to ensure everyone’s safety.

“You know we know people are disappointed, but again we can confidently stand behind our decisions because it is the best thing for our organization,”Bowen says. “I know we’re missing baseball, we all are trust me, but you know this is the right decision for us.”

The decision means fans will have to wait a little longer for those peanuts and cracker jacks. The Sharks say they plan to reach out to all of the fans who have purchased tickets for the 2020 season in the coming weeks to discuss their refunding options.
