WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — ACCESS of Wilmington is seeking feedback from the community on the idea of creating a fully accessible indoor recreation center.

ACCESS of Wilmington wants to expand beyond the outdoor field, The Miracle Field at Olsen Park, by building an indoor facility in the new Olsen Farm Recreation Village.

This will provide year-round adaptative sports, accessible fitness spaces, social connection opportunities, and expanded programs for people of all ages.

ACCESS of Wilmington says, “This next chapter aims to ensure individuals of all abilities can pursue health, wellness, and community every day—without weather-related interruptions or space limitations.”

The community is invited to the town hall sessions which will lay out the vision and welcome community feedback. The first meeting is Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the New Hanover County Public Library Northeast Branch. The second town hall will be held on March 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the New Hanover County Public Library Pine Valley Branch.

“These Town Halls are a vital step in envisioning an inclusive space that supports wellness, connection, and recreation for people who have too often faced physical or social barriers,” said Paula Crozier, Executive Director of ACCESS of Wilmington. “We want to hear directly from community members about what they need, what would make this space most useful, and how we can continue fostering health and belonging through accessible recreation.”

ACCESS also plans on holding sessions specific for veterans, first responders, and seniors in the spring.

Anyone who is unable to attend the meetings but still wants to provide input can take the online survey.
