Activists close accounts to oppose Dakota Access Pipeline

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of activists met up at SunTrust Bank on Thursday to stand in solidarity with those at Standing Rock in North Dakota.

The group withdrew money and closed accounts at SunTrust on Oleander Drive in Wilmington in an effort to defund the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Group members said Thursday was a global day of action for those who oppose the pipeline.

Terri Misch was one of the group members who closed out her accounts at SunTrust. She said banks like SunTrust and Wells Fargo are going to loan customers’ money to Energy Transfer Partners and to fund the pipeline.

“We have the ability to vote with our dollars, and when our money is being used for something that we don’t feel is right, then you know, making a statement and an action, and letting these, these institutions know why we’re doing it,” Misch said. “I think it is the only way that change can come about.”

The group is concerned that the Dakota Access Pipeline could affect the drinking water for millions of people.

“Although North Dakota seems far away from us, like really if we all stand up for what’s right in our backyard then I think we can build stronger communities,” Misch said.

Misch added the group is hoping for 20 to 40 people to close out their accounts, but that even a couple of people participating can help with the cause.
