After nearly 3,000 miles, man completes cross-country run for a cause

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A man ran and walked nearly 3,000 miles from coast to coast to raise awareness for his non-profit.

66 days after leaving San Diego, Kallup McCoy II made it to Wrightsville Beach. He crossed the finish line into the ocean with his family and friends around him.

McCoy is the founder of Rezhope Recovery and Consulting Services, a nonprofit that helps men coming out of incarceration or detox treatment get back on their feet.

McCoy says he had to deal with doubt on his journey across America. As well as issues with eating and energy.

There were also times he was afraid and over stimulated, but it was worth it after overcoming a lot in his life.

“I think one of the things that I really wanted to drive home about this whole journey is understanding where I came from,” McCoy reflected.

“In 2018, I was sitting in a jail cell just looking out, people watching out at the world, just wondering what my life was going to look like. Now here I am finishing a run across America, so you just never know where life is going to take you. Just have faith and hard work, surround yourself with good people and just never give up,” McCoy shared.

After he catches up on sleep, McCoy says he’s considering doing a world tour next year, in hopes to set world records in different countries.

“I think everybody has a plan and purpose for their life. I think I’m just looking at what my life has become. Those that are struggling and may see this or family members that may have someone struggling don’t ever lose hope,” McCoy said.
