Alan Jackson takes the Azalea Festival Stage

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tonight the Azalea Festival concerts officially kicked off when Alan Jackson took the stage in Downtown Wilmington.

Jackson came on around 9 p.m. opening up with “Gone Country,” which is one of his most popular songs.

Thousands of people showed up cheering and dancing the entire time. Jackson stayed on stage for about an hour and a half.

The first concert looks to be a huge success, with the concert area appearing to be completely full.

Nelly plays the Azalea Festival Main Stage tomorrow night.

With all the folks in Downtown Wilmington this weekend, law enforcement will be stepping up their presence.

The Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up to boost their presence during the concerts.

New Hanover County Sheriff spokesman Jerry Brewer said there’s a simple method to staying out of trouble.

“You know if you’re gonna come downtown, make sure that you thought ahead of time,” said spokesman Brewer.”Where you’re going to park or where parking is, there is going to be people there who are more rowdy than others, just make sure you stay clear and to let officers do their jobs”

Police said they will be out in full force again, but really just want folks to have a good time.
