Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, and other organizations, give away trees on Valentines Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Making chocolate for your Valentines? How about planting a tree instead. On Valentines Day, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, New Hanover Community Endowment, and Landfall Foundation partnered to give away more than one thousand trees in Downtown Wilmington.

Alongside DC Virgo Preparatory Academy, the organizations gave out more than one thousand native trees, for free, to Northside residents to increase canopy coverage throughout the neighborhood. Tree distribution started at 11 am, where residents could pick a variety of different plants like Southern Live Oak and Bald Cypress Trees.

Rachel Greer, Executive Director for the Academy, says she can’t wait to see the color that the trees will bring to the area.

“We are excited that there is a mix of native trees, and trees that are fruit bearing. In an area that is commonly known as a food desert, we are going to see Pawpaw growing, some Persimmon Trees, and Blueberries as well,” said Greer.
