WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will distribute more than 1,000 native trees for free on Valentine’s Day.

The distribution event will be held at D.C. Virgo in Downtown Wilmington on Saturday.

Northside residents and families with students who attend D.C. Virgo, DREAMS of Wilmington, Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern NC, Voyage, and/or Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K will have early access from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The event will open to the general public at 11 a.m. and trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This isn’t just a tree giveaway—it’s an investment in community health, climate resilience, and neighborhood pride,” said Isabelle Shepherd, Executive Director of the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees. “We’re focusing our efforts where trees are needed most—where summer heat hits hardest, and where air quality and stormwater challenges are greatest.”

Attendees can choose from the following trees:

  • Southern Live Oak
  • Overcup Oak
  • Blackgum
  • Bald Cypress
  • Longleaf Pine
  • Sweetbay Magnolia
  • Persimmon
  • Pawpaw
  • Eastern Redbud
  • American Hornbeam
  • Sourwood

The Landfall Foundation contributed $10,000 towards this effort and in the spring of 2025 The Endowment awarded two grants to the Alliance for Cape Fear trees strengthening operations.
