Amazon to bring over 1000 new jobs with fulfillment center in Pender County

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The groundbreaking ceremony for a new Amazon fulfillment center was held Wednesday morning.
With the turn of a shovel, officials from New Hanover and Pender County broke ground on Amazon’s new robotics fulfillment center being built at the Pender Commerce Park in Currie.
It’s located off Highway 421 in Pender County, which butts up to the New Hanover County line.
The more than 3 million square foot, 5-story building is where items will be packed for delivery.
Holly Sullivan is Amazon’s Vice President of Worldwide Economic Development.
She said the facility will create over 1,000 new jobs, with an average pay of $22 per hour.
“One of the top things that drives investment projects for us is gonna be talent,” Sullivan said. “Where can we find great people to work in our facilities, whether it be in one of our fulfillment centers or a corporate office. So once we understood the great talent. We generally like to partner with, for local job fairs. We’ll be hiring everything from entry-level associates to upper-level management.”
The facility is expected to move nearly 800,000 packages per day.
Once it’s built, it will be the company’s largest facility in the state.
Wilmington Business Development CEO Scott Satterfield said this project will likely send a strong message to other companies.
“Amazon’s the second largest traded company in the United States of America,” Satterfield said. “And to have them setting down roots in this part of the world sends a message to the rest of the world that the greater Wilmington region can compete for serious projects.”
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said this project also shows how well Pender and New Hanover County can work together to help Cape Fear residents.
“People come together to make these a reality for their community, for the residents and citizens that live here, the jobs that are created, the tax base that is created,” Saffo said. “This is what it’s all about, this is what we get elected to do. So we worked well together and I can’t, I can’t be more proud of Pender County, New Hanover County in coming together, making this a reality.”
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2026.
