“America Needs Godly Men” event at UNCW met with protests, heated debate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) —  Chants from protestors rang UNCW’s Fisher Student Center Wednesday night. While inside the Lumina Theater, an evangelical Christian organization called Promise Keepers hosted their event they called “America Needs Godly Men.”

Shane Winnings is the CEO of Promise Keepers and some of the things he talked about included abortion, masculinity, transgender rights and feminism.

The event comes after recent tension on campus following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder – Charlie Kirk.

Following a vigil on campus and a spirit rock with Kirk’s painted image being defaced, the university released a statement on Wednesday reminding attendees of a clear bag policy and extra security measures that would be in place.

Winnings allowed questions from the audience which included heated debate about abortion.

Devon Mcgrath is a junior at UNCW and he attended the event to hear a difference political viewpoint from his own.

“It’s possible to have debates and stuff like that without one side harassing the other,” Mcgrath said.

The event lasted about two hours with protestors continuing to shout from the outside.
