RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The American Red Cross is asking for blood and platelet donations this month, reminding the public that lifesaving blood products are an essential part of disaster preparedness. Donors of all blood types, especially O positive and B negative, are encouraged to schedule an appointment.

September is National Preparedness Month, a time when the Red Cross highlights how severe weather and other disasters can disrupt blood collections. Trauma patients may need transfusions within minutes of arriving at the hospital, and giving now ensures blood is available when it’s needed most.

Special thank-you gifts for donors

Those who give by Sept. 21 will receive an exclusive Red Cross x PEANUTS® mystery bag featuring one of four special T-shirt designs, while supplies last. Some mystery bags contain a “golden ticket,” which can be redeemed for all four shirts.

Platelet donors between Sept. 22 and Oct. 5 can also receive a Snoopy “Joe Cool” sweatshirt. In addition, anyone who gives between Sept. 22 and Oct. 19 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email.

Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or through the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

WWAY is holding a blood drive at the WWAY Event Center. It will be Friday, September 26 from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
