RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The American Red Cross is urging people to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as they say they’re teetering on a winter blood shortage.

The organization says donors with types O, A negative, and B negative blood are especially needed.

If you are interested in donating blood, you can visit the Red Cross website.

To urge individuals to start the year with a blood donation, the Red Cross and National Football League are partnering for National Blood Donor Month. Those who give January 1st – 25th 2026, will be automatically entered for a chance to win a Super Bowl LX giveaway. The winner and guest will get to enjoy Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California, access to day-of in-stadium pregame activities, tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, round-trip airfare, three-night hotel accommodations (Feb 6-9th), and a $1,000 gift card for expenses.

WWAY will be hosting a blood drive on January 30th from 10 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon.
