An unexpected hero prevents a potential major forest fire in Surf City

SURF CITY, N.C. (WWAY) — An unexpected hero prevented a potential major forest fire in the Surf City area early this morning, March 3, 2026.

Jim Conway was awakened by his beagle, Maddie, just before 2 a.m.

She was scratching, and swatting at a bell the family keeps in their home. At first he thought she just needed to be let out, but when he walked outside, he could see the flames immediately.

Conway says there was a fire in a wooded area roughly 150 yards from his home. He immediately called 911, and stayed on the line until Surf City Fire Department arrived. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze.

Conway is thankful for the fire departments swift response, and to his dog, Maddie.
