Animal shelter still in need after cat hoarding case strains resources

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Animal Shelter continues to need the community’s help after a cat hoarding situation has strained the shelter’s resources.

A Columbus County Animal Shelter spokesperson said seven cats had been adopted on Friday and that two farmers had signed up for the trap, spay & neuter program. That program helps farmers with vermin control.

Although there have been a large number of donations, a spokesperson said the shelter is still in need of folks to foster and adopt the remaining cats.

The shelter has extended its hours from the normal 12-4 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to make these cats as easy to adopt as possible until the cat numbers return to a more manageable level.

Any rescues or those wanting to adopt the healthy cats and kittens presently in the shelter should contact the Columbus County Animal Control at (910) 641-3945.
