Annual ‘FIRES’ event brings fire safety education to Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department and New Hanover County Fire Rescue held the annual FIRES event at Maides Park Thursday afternoon.
Summer campers and groups learned about fire igniting readiness, emergency preparedness, and safety (F.I.R.E.S).
There was a fashion show featuring different uniforms seen in a fire house.
Kids also enjoyed the fire safety house and the vehicle display.
A hands-on CPR station was also set up. The campers were able to ask questions to help gain a better understanding of fire safety.
The Forestry Service and Smokey the Bear were in attendance.
Britney Melvin is a community risk reduction coordinator for the New Hanover County Fire Rescue.
She says the event is a great opportunity for learning.
“FIRES is a great opportunity to get to know your community and get to know what resources are available, but it is also a reminder to stay safe, be prepared, and always be ready for anything that can happen,” Melvin said.
Melvin adds the kids were also sent home with a draw-string bag with a home escape plan and general fire safety information to share with their families.
