Spurrier resigns, offensive line coach Elliott to lead Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, SC — Steve Spurrier has officially announced his resignation as South Carolina’s football coach saying it was time to go.

The 70-year-old Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a school-record 11 victories in three straight seasons during his 10-plus years with the school, but the team was off to an 0-4 mark in the SEC this year and 2-4 overall.

Spurrier reflected on his decision today.

“First of all I’m resigning. I’m not retiring,” Spurrier said. “Now get that part straight. I doubt if I’ll ever be a head coach again, but, you know, maybe coaching a high school team or something, so don’t say I’ve retired.”

Spurrier has been replaced by co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott.
