Applications opening soon for NC’s one-time low-income energy assistance program
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Some people may struggle to keep their homes warm during the winter months.
That’s why, starting Wednesday, December 10th, North Carolina residents can begin applying to the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
The program receives federal funding each year and provides a one-time payment to energy companies to help households cover their heating costs during the winter months.
Last year, more than $50 million was given out to help more than 131,000 households in North Carolina.
Carla West, the division director for human services for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, said this program helps protect hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians every year.
“Payment goes to the vender to help prevent energy insecurity, it supports health, it allows them and their families to allocate limited resources to other essentials like food and medicine,” West said. “You know, it really especially benefits seniors and individuals with disabilities and families who are really needing assistance at this time.”
People over the age of 60 or those in a household with someone with a disability who is receiving food and other services can begin applying on December 10th.
All other households can apply beginning January 2nd.
