Area church helps kids in need for back to school

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — At the First Baptist Church of Leland, students and their families were able to do all their back to school shopping for free.

The church held their 5th annual school supply giveaway today to help kids in need get the tools they need to start the school year off right. Organizers said the idea came from children at the church’s vacation Bible school one year, and has been going on ever since.

This year organizers said they served about 400 children in need from all different grade levels.

Supplies are donated to the church. Students and their families create a list of items they need and then go though picking up the items on that list.

Organizers said the event is all about spreading love throughout the community.
