Area schools celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with the help of socks

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many area schools are rocking their socks in support of World Down Syndrome Day.

In Wilmington, Winter Park Model Elementary School showed their spirit with the help of socks.

Both students and staff were encouraged to wear their unique socks to highlight the uniqueness of people with Down Syndrome. There were striped socks, polka-dotted socks, and socks with all sorts of special designs.

Students even did World Down Syndrome Day crafts throughout the week in preparation for the big day.

Marissa Neely is a second-grade teacher at Winter Park Model Elementary School. She said Thursday includes fun and an important lesson.

“We wear our most colorful, mismatched socks to celebrate diversity and inclusion in our schools. it’s just a fun way to bring awareness to World Down Syndrome Day,” Neely said.

Thursday night, Coastal Bringing Up Down Syndrome, also known as Coastal Buds, will be hosting a Rock Your Socks Sock Hop from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Harrelson Center in downtown Wilmington.
