Area students compete in STEM field events

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — Region O Council for the Advancement of Minorities in Engineering, ROCAME, hosted its 38 Annual STEM Student  Jamboree at CFCC North Campus Saturday.

About 200 middle and high students from Columbus, New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick counties participated in this half day tournament.

The jamboree consisted of 12 activities including robotics, electrogames, egg drop, public speaking, Powerpoint presentation, math test, and a quiz bowl.

Retired chemist Dr. William Flythe says the lack of interest at the high school level is a challenge but motivation from parents, families, and mentors is key.

“This is just as of a challenge to the parents as well as other adults in the community,” Dr. Flythe said. “Let’s get behind these kids when you find out they are doing STEM related activities and encourage them and cheer them.”

ROCAME started back in 1979 to encourage minority youth to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The program begins in middle school where students are identified and placed on education track to prepare them for college.
