Area YMCA holds National Soccer Day event

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — For the first time ever, an area organization held an event to help bring kids together to play a certain sport.
The Nir Family YMCA hosted around 200 kids for National Soccer Day. Those in attendance could try and score in a net among other activities.
Wilmington area YMCA’s have around 2,400 kids signed up for their soccer leagues.
Athletic Director Lee Spooner says soccer is a great way to get kids accustomed to sports.
“Soccer’s where it starts the youngest age groups,” Spooner said. “You can start teaching a two-year-old basic fundamentals of soccer. Soccer’s the easiest sport to learn. That’s where most kids start soccer. Once they get the fundamentals down, that’s when they start branching out and trying other sports.”
Spooner says they plan to hold this event again next year as the United States will host most of the 2026 World Cup.
