Area’s Congressional delegation against Iran nuke deal

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Three of the Republicans who represent southeastern North Carolina in Congress have come out against the nuclear accord reached earlier today between world powers and Iran.

Sen. Richard Burr, Sen. Thom Tillis and Rep. David Rouzer each issued statements today opposing the deal. Rep. Walter Jones has not yet released a statement about the agreement.

Sen. Richard Burr
“I have deep concerns about the President’s Iranian nuclear deal and anticipate a thorough Congressional review of the agreement. Several Americans are currently held in Iran, and the regime continues to be the largest supporter of terrorism in the world. Through the work of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the American people and Congress have the right to evaluate this deal and let their voices be heard.”

Rep. David Rouzer
“Iran’s publicly stated goals are to wipe Israel from the face of the Earth and to destroy America, and they have a substantial history of actions which prove their commitment to both.  A deal with Iran that rolls back sanctions simply means Iran will have more money to fund acts of terrorism as well as accelerate their advancement towards nuclear weapons.  The Obama Administration is foolish to think this is good for anyone except Iran and their agents of terrorism.  Rest assured, I will vote against this deal and will work hard to help secure the votes to override the President’s likely veto.”

Sen. Thom Tillis

“President Obama has staked his legacy on reaching any deal with Iran without any regard for how dangerous and destabilizing the final accord will be for the United States, Israel, the Middle East, and the rest of the world. The President has turned his back on decades of assurances from previous administrations of both parties that Iran would not acquire nuclear weapons. He has willfully ignored forty years of hostility from Tehran.

“This deal appears to be a complete capitulation to the Iranian regime, paving the path for Iran to become a nuclear power in the foreseeable future. The President broke his promises to the American people by offering concession after concession: no snap inspections, no limits on Iran’s ballistic-missile force, no resolution of Iran’s weaponization activities, no dismantling of Iran’s global terror network, and no release of the American citizens being held captive in Iran’s prisons. Make no mistake, the lasting legacy will be the birth of a Middle East nuclear arms race, plunging the region into further instability and chaos.

“Democrats and Republicans share grave concerns over this bad deal, and Congress now has a responsibility to do everything it can to stop it from being implemented.”
