Arrest made in shooting near Kure Beach pier

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A woman is facing charges in a Sunday afternoon shooting.

Police Chief Dennis Cooper said Tonya Michelle Jones, 38, is facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Jones was booked overnight and is in jail under a $75,000 bond.

Police say William J. Cheney was shot in the upper thigh in the 100 block of K Avenue in Kure Beach Sunday afternoon. They say it all started as a verbal confrontation. The chief did not say how the victim and suspect knew each other.

Cooper told WWAY there hasn’t been a shooting in the town since at least 1992 when he started.
