CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Coastal Federation and the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries are partnering to complete the construction of an oyster and recreational fishing reef in the lower Cape Fear River.

This project will result in an additional 4 acres of shallow reef habitat in the division’s artificial reef, which is just offshore of Carolina Beach State Park.

The oyster pathway will eventually extend down-river to Bald Head Island, connecting remaining natural reefs with artificial reefs constructed by Audubon NC, UNCW, and the Bald Head Island Conservancy.

“This reef site is somewhat unique in its proximity to shore, making it readily accessible to shore-based anglers or kayakers. The materials placed at the site in 2017 have withstood several hurricanes and continue to support oyster populations and provide fishing opportunities during high tide. We expect this site will remain productive for anglers visiting Carolina Beach State Park.” said Jordan Byrum, Enhancement Project Manager for DMF.

State park visitors should exercise caution near the marina while construction materials are stockpiled and mobilized with heavy machinery, and marina managers will limit access to some boat slips.
