As we fall back one hour, remember this important safety tip
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Daylight saving time is coming to an end this weekend.
You’ll need to set your clock back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. This is also a good time to change batteries in your smoke detectors.
It is important to keep up with smoke detector maintenance for safety.
Consumer reports recommend changing your smoke detector batteries every six months as a safety precaution.
Smoke detectors are good for ten years, but after 10 years they will need to be fully replaced.
Brooke Sasser the fire and life safety educator with the Wilmington Fire Department explains why this is a good time to change those batteries.
“During this time of year, and when the clock changes to change the batteries in your smoke alarm. We are supposed to change them twice a year, so it’s a great time since we have daylight saving time twice a year,” Sasser said.
Sasser adds, “Even though it makes us a little groggy the next day and a little sleepy from changing those clocks, it is a good reminder.”
Sasser adds if you need help or have questions when it comes to smoke detectors. You can reach out to the Wilmington Fire Department.
