Ashley High School receives $15,000 worth of instruments from grant
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Members of the music department at Ashley High School will sound even better after receiving several new instruments as part of a grant.
The department received $15,000 worth of instruments from the Gerry and Franca Mulligan Foundation.
It was nominated due to the reputation of the school’s music department.
Some of the new instruments include a soprano saxophone, alto saxophone and tenor saxophone, trumpet, and an oboe.
Music teacher Robert Parker said the new instruments have helped his students and also allowed them to try playing more genres of music.
“So it was really, really super beneficial for us to be able to have a few new instruments in this area,” Parker said.
The other thing it really did for me is it really kicked us into doing some more jazz. So we don’t typically or we hadn’t typically been doing a lot of jazz and I just kind of got more and more into it because of this organization and the foundation.”
The department received the instruments early on in this school year and have used them for the marching band season and several other performances since then.
