Ashley Screaming Eagles can’t hold the lead over the weekend

FAIRMONT, NC (WWAY) — Ashley held a 7-0 lead entering Monday’s high school football game, but it was actually a game that started on Friday. Due to lightning on Friday the Ashley-Fairmont game was suspended in the second quarter with Ashley holding a 7-0 lead. Fairmont played much better on Monday than they did on Friday. It was 14-14 entering the 4th quarter, but Fairmont scored two touchdowns to beat Ashley 26-14 in a matchup of winless teams. Ashley hasn’t won a varsity football game since October of 2013.

“It’s like night and day from two weeks ago to tonight,” Fairmont head coach Mark Heil said after the win over Ashley. “In many ways, number one is our mental preparation. We didn’t have childish things on the sideline, we acted like we cared about the game. We still have a few players who play as individuals instead of team player. Number two, I like the way we were physical tonight. Let me tell you they are much improved. I’ve been playing Ashley when I was at Purnell Swett and they are a much improved football team and I know they are 0-3, but they’ve been competitive in all 3 of their games.”

Ashley has this coming Friday off. The Screaming Eagles will host Westover on September 18. Ashley will open the league play in the Mideastern Conference on September 25 in Shallotte against West Brunswick.
