WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Downtown Wilmington Rotary Club honored Ashley High School English teacher Mattie Johnson as the 2025 New Hanover County Schools Rookie of the Year during its annual ceremony on Tuesday.

Johnson joined Ashley High School in December 2022 after earning her Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Education English from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Guided by her motto, “You Can Do Hard Better,” Johnson aims to instill resilience and confidence in her students, and attributes her success to the support of colleagues, administration, parents and students.

“When teachers feel supported in the things that are within control, we can refocus our energy into ensuring student success,” Johnson said.

Ashley High School Assistant Principal Michelle Kornegay praised Johnson for her leadership and impact.

“Ms. Johnson’s positive, consistent, and confident nature aligns perfectly with The Eagle Way, and we know her leadership potential will only continue to grow,” Kornegay said. “We are beyond proud of her and cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”
