Ashley’s Adventures: NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Jellyfish, stingrays and sharks. You’ll find it all at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
While it’s a popular attraction for tourists, the aquarium is a great learning tool for locals.
“We focus on species here in North Carolina that could be seen in our backyards, but often aren’t,” said Robin Nalepa, the aquarium’s public relations coordinator.
You’ll find native fish, sharks, sea turtles, and even alligators.
One alligator, however, is something you probably wouldn’t see in your backyard. Luna is one of 50 known albino alligators in the world. The aquarium says she probably wouldn’t have survived in the wild.
Inside you’ll also find plenty of other exotic exhibits.
Sea horses, jellyfish and clownfish are sure to capture your attention.
You’ll also find the unexpected.
The aquarium is home to a bald eagle, who was rescued from along the road.
During the summer of 2016, visitors can also surround themselves with butterflies inside the Butterfly Bungalow.
But beware! If you’re walking through the garden, you might run into a life size dinosaur.
A visit to the aquarium is more than a visual experience. It’s also hands on.
Have you ever wanted to pet a crab? Now is your chance.
You can even talk to scuba divers underwater as they swim with sharks!
The Aquarium at Fort Fisher is open all year long, but during the summer season Nalepa recommends visiting early, or later in the day, when the aquarium isn’t as busy.
Think you’re too old to visit the aquarium? Not a chance!
“Everyone should visit the aquarium. It’s such a wonderful time to connect to nature and to connect with family,” Nalepa said
It really is fun for the whole family.
