NEW YORK (WWAY) – The Cape Fear has a new professional athlete.

Saniya Rivers, a 2021 graduate of Ashley High School, was drafted by the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun 8th overall Monday night in New York City.

Rivers began her college career at South Carolina before spending the last three seasons at NC State. She averaged around 12 points per game each of the last two years while leading the Wolfpack to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2025.

A former Gatorade National Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American, the guard will join a solid Sun squad that finished 28-12 last season. That was the third best record in the WNBA.
