Assisted living resident charged with manslaughter after another dies

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — An assisted living resident is charged with manslaughter after deputies say another resident died this weekend.

A spokeswoman with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the Leland Assisted Living House about an assault between two residents Saturday around 5:30 p.m. She said the victim, James Wescott, was pointing his cane at the offender William King, 68. King told Wescott to stop waving his cane, which he did not and King stood up and struck Wescott.

Deputies said Wescott fell to the floor and hit his head causing him to lose consciousness.  He was transported to New Hanover Hospital to be evaluated where it was determined he had massive bleeding on the brain. Deputies arrested King and charged him with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and was given a $50,000 bond.

Sunday morning around 9 a.m., BCSO detectives were notified that Wescott had passed away due to the injuries he sustained in the assault. Detectives then charged King with involuntary manslaughter where he received another $50,000 bond, for a total bond of $100,000.
