AT&T to close flooded Goldsboro call center, cut 95 jobs

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Citing flood damage from Hurricane Matthew and falling DSL demand, AT&T will shutter a Goldsboro call center that once employed 400 people and was established in 2008 to repatriate American jobs from foreign countries.

News outlets report the telecommunications giant disclosed the planned closure in a notice sent Tuesday to the state Department of Commerce.

AT&T said in a letter that the call center’s 95 employees, including 78 customer assistants who took calls from AT&T customers, will be laid off in January.

The facility has been rendered unusable because of flooding and has remained vacant for more than two weeks. AT&T spokesman Marty Richter said the employees have still been receiving their pay and benefits and those who choose to not relocate will continue to get them through Jan. 3.
