Automakers post big October sales gains
DETROIT (AP) – Most major automakers are reporting double-digit U.S. sales gains for October — as the industry rolls along toward what could be a record-setting year.
GM says its sales rose almost 16 percent last month. Ford is reporting a 13 percent gain. Nissan’s sales rose 12.5 percent over a year ago, and Fiat Chrysler reported a gain of nearly 15 percent.
Honda says its sales rose 8.6 percent. But Volkswagen, still dealing with an emissions-cheating scandal, posted just a small gain.
GM says overall U.S. auto sales have run at an annual rate of 17.8 million for the past six months. That puts within reach the annual record of 17.35 million set in 2000.
Sales have been greased by cheap financing, low gas prices and an improving economy. Automakers have induced buyers further by offering incentives on slower-selling models.
