Back to school bus safety reminders
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With thousands of students across the cape fear returning to class, and lots of buses on the roads in the mornings and afternoons — it’s important to remember school bus safety laws.
While the laws vary depending on two-lane roads, four-lane roads, or multi-lane highways without a median, everyone needs to brush up on what to do if you see a stop arm extended and lights flashing.
Sergeant James Ballard is with the North Carolina highway patrol.
He says a good rule of thumb is to always stop for a stopped school bus and to always be observant if you see one.
“So, generally, when school buses are traveling it’s going to be the same time that people are going to or coming from work, so we just ask you to be able to focus on the road, focus on the school buses,” said Ballard.
Ballard adds — remembering and practicing school bus safety will keep everyone safe this new school year.
A reminder for drivers — passing a stopped bus can result in fines, points on your driver’s license, and increased insurance premiums.
