6th annual Barbeque on the Bluff to raise money for hurricane relief
FAIR BLUFF, NC (WWAY) — Its been more than six months since the town of Fair Bluff was ravaged by the destruction of Hurricane Matthew.
Despite the efforts made so far, some people believe more has to be done.
“We’re still in recovery mode and I project that we’re going to be in recovery mode for the next two or three years. This is not going to be-there’s not quick fix for this,”Kathy Ashley, Fair Bluff chamber of Commerce president, said.
Floodwaters might have ravaged the town of Fair Bluff, but they didn’t extinguish its flame.
Despite the damage, this is not stopping the people of Fair Bluff from holding their sixth annual Barbeque on the Bluff and this year, it will help raise money for hurricane relief.
“They decided to have it to bring people back to the town to get the feeling back in the town and show people that we’re interested and we want to survive and move forward,” Billy Hammonds, Fair Bluff mayor, said.
This is also a yearly competition among the cooks competing.
“There’s a first second and third winner and we’re members of the North Carolina Pork council. So our winner will get to go to the state competition,” Ashley said.
The time since Hurricane Matthew has been difficult but many people have stepped up to bring the town back up to speed, showing a sense of community.
“People work together and to accomplish the mission you got to work together and work in harmony to move forward. Because if you don’t, you will move backwards and go nowhere forward,” Hammonds says.
Mayor Hammonds estimates that around 300 people will come out for the barbeque and rest assured there will be plenty to eat for anyone that comes out.
Barbeque on the Bluff will feature several professional cooks showing off their skills in a cooking competition.
Each plate will cost eight dollars.
If you miss it tomorrow, they’ll fire up their grills on Saturday.
