Baristas fired over rap music on Duke campus

DURHAM, NC (WTVD/CNN) — A coffee shop at Duke University is backtracking, just days after firing two baristas over rap music.

The owner of the Joe Van Gogh coffee shop is now apologizing for the firings, which followed a customer complaint that the shop was playing music with inappropriate lyrics.

The complaint came from the Vice President of Student Affairs at Duke University, Larry Moneta. Moneta said he was shocked to hear profanity and sexually-charged lyrics playing at a business that serves children. He added that he never asked for the employees to be fired.

The shop’s owner said the company misunderstood Duke’s position on the case and should have handled the situation differently.

The song playing at the time was “Get Paid” by Young Dolph.
