BB&T Jamboree kicks off the 2015 football season on Friday


WILMINGTON, NC (BB&T RELEASE) — The 29th annual BB&T Football Jamboree will be held Aug. 14 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, NC. The prep scrimmage is a fundraiser for 10 southeastern North Carolina high schools and student scholarships.

The jamboree begins at 5 p.m. with a cheerleading showcase featuring squads from New Hanover, E.A. Laney, John T. Hoggard, West Brunswick, Whiteville, Wallace-Rose Hill, South Columbus, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and Ashley high schools.

Scrimmages begin at 6 p.m. The matchups in order are:
Laney vs. South Columbus
Wallace-Rose Hill vs. Hoggard
Ashley vs. West Brunswick
New Hanover vs. West Brunswick
North Brunswick vs. South Brunswick
Each game consists of two 12-minute periods

“This annual event highlights the excitement and anticipation for a run at conference titles and state playoffs for the 10 area high schools,” said BB&T’s Andrew Cooke, Jamboree Co-chairman. “It is one of the most exciting high school events in southeastern North Carolina with a playoff atmosphere to help kick-off the season.”

Proceeds from last year’s event totaled $51,765, enough to fund 20 $1,000 scholarships (two per school). In addition, participating schools received about $2,000 each for their general operating budgets.

Since its inception in 1989, approximately $1,156,841 have been raised for Southeastern North Carolina high schools, and included in that amount, 546 student scholarships totaling $532,000 have been awarded, $48,650 in Cheerleader Awards, and $567,098 in money back to the schools.

Advance tickets are $5 and available at all BB&T branches in Whiteville, Wilmington, Wallace, Rose Hill, Shallotte, Southport, Tabor City and Leland. Tickets are $7 at the gate. (Coolers, bags and umbrellas are not permitted in Legion Stadium or this event. Metal detectors are in use for admission into Legion Stadium.)

10 High School football teams from Southeastern North Carolina participate in this annual scrimmage game to kick off the school year. Money raised from the event funds scholarships for local students to attend college, and supports the general fund at each participating school. In the past 28 years, the event has raised $1,156,841.00 with over 500 local students receiving scholarships.
