Black History Month: The Story Behind the Wilmington Ten
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)- Amanda Fitzpatrick sat down with author and activist Larry Thomas to talk about the Wilmington Ten and their impact on the community.
Thomas said The Wilmington Ten was a group of people boycotting the schools within the community back in 1971. The reason for the boycott was because people became upset when the New Hanover County Schools were ordered to integrate with each other and Williston which was Wilmington’s all black school was forced to close.
Thomas also explained how the boycotts lead to a straight week of rioting and looting within Wilmington.
