Bladen County deputy injured in White Oak shooting

BLADEN COUNTY (WWAY) — A Bladen County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a shooting Friday morning in the White Oak community.

The incident occurred after an anonymous 911 call around 7:40 that morning.

After receiving the tip, the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office responded to this area, the 600 block of Pine Acres Road, there to serve warrants to 46-year-old William Antonio Bright.

Authorities say a struggle ensued and Bright open fired, hitting a deputy’s bulletproof vest.

Law enforcement officers returned fire and Bright was injured.

Neither sustained life-threatening injuries, and both were transported to local area hospitals.

Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker says this particular suspect was wanted and at large.

“To my knowledge, he had several outstanding warrants he’s also, I’ve been contacted by the Adult Probation, he was an absconder from probation; they had contacted US Marshals to try to track him down, and, of course, we didn’t know that part this morning, but we found that out later on,” said McVicker.

Bright has had several brushes with the law, charged over the years with anything from larceny to domestic abuse.

The name of the officer involved in the incident has not yet been released, but will be next week.
