BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) –A driver who fell asleep at the wheel after working all night caused a head-on collision early Thursday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on N.C. 211 between Clarkton and Council.

Troopers say Jonathan Allen Wood, 34, of Bladenboro, fell asleep while driving, causing his truck to veer off the road to the right, where it struck a mailbox. Wood then overcorrected, crossing the center line and hitting a guardrail on the opposite side of the road. His truck re-entered the roadway in the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with an eastbound minivan.

Wood was ejected from the truck during the crash. He was flown to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, according to authorities.

The driver of the minivan was taken to Cape Fear Valley Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown, also with minor injuries.

Wood has been charged with exceeding the posted speed limit, driving left of center, and failing to wear a seatbelt.
