Blood donation restrictions

CAPE FEAR REGION, NC (WWAY) — Lifesaving blood donations are needed more than ever. Leaving some folks wanting to act but finding out they are unable to.

Donating blood is a good deed. But there are restrictions when it comes to who can give.

Upon many of the common non-qualifiers; low iron, not meeting desired weight, travel outside of the U.S., and if you’re on certain medications.

With those medications, you are either ineligible to donate or are given a waiting period.

Cally Edwards is a spokesperson for American Red Cross. She recommended speaking with your primary care doctor before making any final decisions.

“Each person as an individual has different needs. So, that is why we really do want people to look for information ahead of time,” Edwards said. “Especially, if they have concerns, they can also talk with their local doctor to find out if there are any concerns for them donating blood.”

If you are considering donating, definitely check out American Red Cross’s website to view ineligibilities, and make sure you are a qualifying donor.
